I'm not sure why this is happening, I cannot reproduce the bug.
pbzip2 is working fine for me on NFS mounted file systems. Are you
sure you have the correct permissions set to be able to modify the
file meta data?

I was root in the above example and I had just written out an XFS dump.
If I use gzip or bzip2, the error did not occur.
