After investigating the various files in the iceweasel/firefox profile directory I created a new profile from scratch and copied some key files from the old profile into the new profile. Everything was fine until I copied the old 'prefs.js', which caused the pie charts to disappear again. I didn't track down which preference caused the error (I tried deleting a couple of suspects, but no success).
