Just using this engine doesn't give me the ability to reproduce. (I also set up my language and locale environment to match yours) Btw.. I doubt the strace debug stuff will catch the issue. Would it be possible for you to attempt commenting some of these changes out.. I can't see how they might cause it, but "something" must be having an effect. The font is the most likely I'd guess - if it forces glib to fiddle with some encodings. I don't have the font, so I can't really test changing that here.
