your idea goes a bit beyond the original plan of sm, and as one of the
key points of sm is simplicity, I’m going to be careful with adding
features.

But if well defined and documented, such an "remote control API" could
indeed be useful. Add "dbus service" to the list of crazy ideas :-)

Using control characters on stdin means that buffering issues have to be
taken care of. Probably not a big deal, but might be inconvenient when
using this API from the shell.

File monitoring would be a nice, simple idea, in conjunction with
inotify (or whatever the name of the current file monitoring API is
called, it seems to change often :-)).

Are you interested in/capable of programming that and sending a patch?

Note that since a short while screen-message works on Windows as well. A
patch should either be portable of contain the necessary #IFDEFs.
