According to http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:vFzwqGT66_EJ:lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/12/msg03013.html (Multi-word label in LILO) - original seems gone (!) - the patch was applied in version 1:22.5.8-6 and IIRC spaces did work for a while again some (much) time ago. However as for now they are being replaced with "_". Perhaps some check has come to overrule the patch.
