I fail to understand how two packages both declaring themselves as installable concurrently but in reality not able to do so, is an error of only one of those packages.

My standpoint is that if (as the subject of this bugreport says) uw-imapd and courier-imap are possible to select for installation concurrently using APT (including aptitude, synaptics and other frontends) then *both* uw-imapd *and* courier-imap should conflict with the virtual imap-server package.

Sorry, my analysis was incomplete: uw-imapd is broken because it does not "Provides: imap-server". IMAP servers should both Provide and Conflict to with this virtual package. That way, explicit conflicts with specific packages are not needed. (Similarly for pop3-server.)

Ah, now I understand - and agree!

(And sorry for any duplicate mails, I got some bounces and resent the messages, but apparently they still got through.)

That's probably because the bug has been closed so long that it automatically has been "archived". I have now unarchived the bug prior to posting this.
