Does it also fail the first time, or just on reconnecting?

Can you please try on the standard port and without the deprecated
use_ssl option? From this version on, irssi-xmpp will try to use the
StartTLS command if available. By the way, this has been the recommended
way to operate for a few years so I suggest you adopt it anyways.

It's very strange indeed: if the authentication succeeds, this means
that there is a connection in the first place and that the server
suddenly stops responding. Can you please enable the "xmpp_xml_console"
setting and paste the contents of the XML communication?
