It's kind-of fixed upstream, but the fix is only currently on trunk, and
could probably be improved to remove the overhead of decoding the old
positional data in the "has changed" case, as noted in the ticket:

I'm reluctant to rush backporting this patch to the stable branch.  It's
non-trivial in size and scope.  The original version from Kan-Ru had at
least one bug in, despite looking very plausible.

This is quite a serious performance issue for certain use cases, but it
would be really bad to introduce a regression in functionality which
might affect all users.

Martin said on IRC this fix would be useful for notmuch hacking at LCA2010.
I could probably upload a xapian-core package based on SVN truck to
experimental if that's would be useful.
