  The expressions you enter when searching packages are regular expressions=
=2E =20
You need to put backslashes in front of metacharacters like '+' and '.' in=
=20
order to search for them:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ aptitude search 'g\+\+'
p   g++     - The GNU C++ compiler

  I apologize for the inconvenience, but as very few package names contain=
=20
metacharacters (g++ is the only prominent example I can think of), I felt=20
that this compromise was better than forcing people to enter a special esca=
pe=20
sequence just to use regular expressions.
