Hmm, my assumption was that this behavior was intentional and that you
were intended to provide a status file (and the directory it goes in).

Also, dpkg's behavior isn't much different.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~>mkdir -p /tmp/var/lib/dpkg
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~>sudo dpkg --root /tmp -i 
~/lib/debian/unstable/pdmenu_1.2.87_i386.deb        
dpkg: failed to open package info file `/tmp/var/lib/dpkg/status' for reading: 
No such file or directory

Isn't this just avoidance of bloat?
