I've had the same failure. Upgrade in X11 didn't work. Running the script /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh in X11 failed. Running on the console works, but running apt-get dist-upgrade on the console fails as reported in the previous emails for this bug report. My /bin/sh points at bash.
