I have been hit by the very same kind of problem. Having had a look at the code, I indeed also think that the capture of duplicity output is in cause. I is potentially huge on big amounts of files and if verbosity of duplicity is increased to level 5 for instance. I will try and propose a patch (redirection to temporary file) as well as with the ability to get the outputs of duplicity sent by mail in case of success (#563734). Hope this helps.
