This quick addition unfortunately creates an ABI change that isn't automatically reflected in the SONAME, and therefore shouldn't be applied all by itself. In Ubuntu, you've been running with this change for enough releases to just not bother anymore, I guess. For Debian, it's probably time to finally bite the bullet and start a transition.
