Right after updating this bug, the Samba folks provided a patch for the
dot problem.
It is going in as bug 7005 and involves replacing the dot in the
filename string if it gets removed during processing.
They are attaching a patch now.
I'll test it out and update here with more details.
Given the fact that mangle method=hash is broken all-together in lenny,
and that the fix(es) are entirely self contained to mangle_hash.c, I
would vote to update stable. The changes won't impact the default
"hash2" method and fix a regression from etch. (Of course I'm not an
impartial vote...) :-)
