I tried purging jabberd14, reinstalling, and it listens. Then I tried copying in the config file I was using before. It still listens. Something exterior to the config file must have been causing the problem. (That the problem first occurred with the same config file that had been working prior to a reboot also points to that.) I don't know how to track down what. -- see shy jo
