Ok, so quick question to Kurt:  Do you know which autoconf version you are 
running?

I will keep that in mind. Fortran parts often change less frequently which
increases the chances if autoconf files getting stale.

I will patch R 2.10.1 by hand as you suggested, but we should liaise with
Kurt to make sure everything is tied up correctly upstream.
