I think that
1.Error message must be more understandable.
2.Default debian installation must work "from the box" or at least
should give a clue how to set up it correctly.

You probably did the first installation of courier/sqwebmail with 0.47-3, 
which had that bug. If you set up a completly fresh box, it should work out 
of the box.
