I made the downgrade harder than it needed to be because when I went to search for 'libavcodec52' I misspelled it, and thought the only place it was available was from the multimedia repository. Well, live and learn.
On a third machine I took multimedia repository out of apt sources then successfully installed (on a third machine) 'libavcodec52', 'libavformat52' and 'libavformat49' (needed by the codec52 library) from Debian works fine so far.
