So i think i've been successful in breaking out the shared library,
thanks to Jordan's work. I ended up making a few little patches to the
build system, and i want to get Jordan's feedback on them before i
upload to debian, but it all WorksForMeâ„¢.

If you're interested in trying out my current work, you can try building
the package from my xdotool git repo directly:

 git clone git://lair.fifthhorseman.net/~dkg/xdotool
 cd xdotool
 git buildpackage -uc -us

that should produce three .deb files: libxdo0, libxdo-dev, and xdotool.
xdotool and libxdo-dev should Depend: on libxdo0. (you may see some
FAILURE reports during the "make test" part of the process; that's
acceptable right now, as long as there are some SUCCESSes in there)

For your new version of keynav, you'll probably want to Build-Depend: on
 libxdo-dev.

So right now i'm waiting on Jordan's feedback about my changes before i
upload to debian. And if you want to try building keynav against these
preliminary versions of libxdo-dev, i'd be happy to get your feedback
too, so i can make sure things work for you.

This has been a good learning process for me (breaking out a new library
package), so thanks for pushing it forward. Let me know if you need
anything else from these packages.

Regards,
