Sounds like a connection-related problem. Icedove wants to use multiple connections. Perhaps the above happens either because it can't create a new connection or one of the existing connections hang? By default Dovecot limits users to 10 connections from same IP, is Icedove perhaps trying to use more that that? It's configurable.
