I'm not sure I understand the problem correctly. A translator can always break the translation. I don't think it would be useful for the translators to restrict what they can type in the msgstr field. For this there are some quality checks, implemented for example in pofilters (I don't remember if these quality checks were integrated in virtaal, but those quality checks differ from the feature of editing the translation). I would propose to close this bug or to change it a wishlist bug so that the quality checks are better integrated in virtaal.
