Excuse me, but I'm not sure I get your question. The files were hosted on the web, they were not attachments to my mail. I was trying to download those files and they kept on being opened right inside the browser (the media files actually play inside Epiphany). Just to be sure I tried to download a media (sound) file through GMail and it failed as well: epiphany tried to open it and then the page was redirected to my GMail account.
