I found that simply disabling all the active accounts (in the pidgin Accounts menu), then re-enabling them, in the Pidgin menu, allows it to connect just fine. I've been merrily using this workaround for weeks before it occurred to me that it was a bit tedious and I ought to check for bug reports... can't believe people were hosing their configs as a first resort!
