Perhaps the subject of my bug report has been taken too literally.

As shown above, multitail appears to throw an assertion and reveals
the innards somewhat. To a non-C coder and user like myself it looks
like something has gone wrong.

Multitail should do what tail does and report: "multitail: cannot open
`auth.log' for reading: No such file or directory"

Please reconsider.
