If my only activity consists of using the "scrollwheel" of my touchpad (which I do for example when reading a large web page in my browser) then xscreensaver locks the screen after a few minutes. If instead I am typing or moving the "mouse" cursor of my touchpad, xscreensaver recognizes the activity and does not lock.
