All, After more testing it seems that PulseAudio has difficulty with the "Tone" switch in ALSA. If "Tone" is off, PulseAudio works as advertised. However, without "Tone" on, one cannot manipulate the bass and treble settings via alsamixer. Obviously, this would be a wishlist item rather than an important-severity bug report.
