Hi, I have encountered the same problems when testing rlwrap on my Debian.
However, when I ssh from my Debian on my FreeBSD machine (on which I have locally compiled rlwrap-0.32) and run rlwrap, everything goes fine. Which makes me think that this bug is not related to the running terminal, gnome terminal 2.28.1 in my case. I also have the same results using konsole and rxvt. I hope this helps.
