gconf terribly wastes disk- and backupspace in /etc with default files that definitely do not belong in /etc. On my system /etc/gconf became 36 MB large, which is sort of sick. Whoever puts 36 MB of default files in /etc didn't understand the unix file system structure. These things belong to /usr/share or /usr/lib. Interestingly the same problem was reported almost two years ago (Bug 227726), but completely ignored.
