Maybe using set -x to see the various calls. Do you have a BROWSER
variable defined? The fact that *only* iceweasel has the problem really

I tried as you suggested but there was no additional information from this. I don't have a BROWSER variable set and I have verified the behavior on two machines (i386 and amd64). I have also observed the change in behavior as I upgraded from iceweasel 3.5.4 to the newest version 3.5.5. It is certainly the case that this is due to some change in iceweasel but that doesn't mean the bug is to be fixed there. Perhaps it is necessary to change the behavior of "sensible-browser" and "exo-open" to work with the new iceweasel.

By the way, if I try "sensible-browser -x" the behavior i describe is not observed. i can't find the documentation to tell me what the "-x" option might be doing but it may be a clue.
