Unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce this error. I don't get the write error you get; that error is definitely not from the atanks code itself, since nowhere do those error messages appear in the source, neither is strerror/errno referenced. I am able to play the game as expected. This is naive, but I was wondering if you could please retry this game, maybe after removing ~/.atanks, to see if it helps?
