We had a short discussion on this within the MPICH group. We believe
that we will be able to modify the code such that enabling it at
configure time should not add any additional performance overhead for
applications that don't need this support. So starting mpich2-1.3, you
should be able to configure it in by default.

The patch I submitted for OpenMPI which enabled BLCR support did
indeed add an extra binary package, openmpi-checkpoint which avoids
linking/depending on libcr0 unless you want the checkpoint support. I
couldn't see a similar way to achieve this functionality in MPICH2
though.
