In my .xsession, I run xrandr -o left which lets me use my screen in portrait mode. (Many modern flat screens, including the Dell one I'm using, have a pivot at the back that lets one turn them sideways.) Unfortunately, doing this gets me a bunch of broken fonts. I exec fvwm at the end of .xsession and it comes up with menus that are barely readable: it looks as if the fonts have got their metrics set for the original orientation, or something like that. Until recently, it has been the case that I can simply exit and log in again; the login prompt from xdm came up in the right orientation for portrait mode and I got started sensibly on the second atttempt, with perfectly sensible fonts. I'll report the new problem separately, that now prevents me using that work-around ... it's rather more severe ! I don't know what makes that go wrong, but clearly xrandr needs to do something differently to ensure The Right fonts show up once X gets going - perhaps it needs to restart xfs ?
