Additional information . . . I compared the old '.conf' file with the new one. The ONLY difference that I could see was that the 'listen localhost' directive in the old version was active, and the new version wasn't. So uncommented it, restarted tne new (8.4) version, and no difference.
BTW, the error, after again altering the 'postgres' with a password change, in trying to connect with 'psql -U postgres -d postgres -W' on the command line is: psql: FATAL: Ident authentication failed for user "postgres".
