Indeed, it is not necessary to restart gdm. A reload should be enough and it will avoid killing the current session. Dear libc maintainers: please see how libpam0g.postinst does. There is an exception for gdm, for which a reload action is invoked instead of a full restart. Thanks, -- .''`.
