I disagree that updating usb.ids with a script is stupid, it's super useful when filing bug reports to be able to run update-usbids to make sure you have the latest info. I think having it in volatile will be _also_ be useful to ensure that it's reasonably up to date on all systems. So please don't get rid of update-usbids.
