I concur, as I've just been hit by this too.

On the same line, the manpage refers 3 different ways of using the
format specification command:

1) --format
2) -t
3) --text-format

Of the 3, only (1) is correct, (2) does not exist (it is rather "-f"),
(3) does not exist either.
