Package: linux-image-2.6.30-2-amd64 Version: 2.6.30-8 Severity: normal With the ethernet device on this laptop (Lenovo ideapad u350) the tg3 driver it needs doesn't actually work unless the broadcom module is loaded first to provide the PHY. However because this is only true for some tg3-driven devices (I understand) it is not a dependency. The result is that the kernel duly loads tg3 and the user gets no ethernet.
The workaround is to do this: add tg3 to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist run update-initramfs to copy that into the initramfs to prevent early loading of tg3. Add tg3 to /etc/modules so it gets explicitly loaded later Add /etc/modprobe.d/tg3.conf containing: install tg3 /sbin/modprobe broadcom; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install tg3 so that when it is explictly loaded it forces a load of braodcom first. This has taken me a couple of frustrating hours to work out and some way of making it 'just work' is needed. When using debian-installer the problem is worse because the broadcom module is not even present in the d-i rootfs (presumably because the module deps say it#s not needed) so you can't even manually get your network working, and thus have to do an offline base-install then install a real full kernel package. If loading the broadcom module doesn't do any harm when it is not needed then just loading it anyway as explicit dep would be good. If not then some other way of making sure it gets loaded before tg3, when required, is needed. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 2.6.30-2-amd64 (Debian 2.6.30-8) (wa...@debian.org) (gcc version 4.3.4 (Debian 4.3.4-3) ) #1 SMP Fri Sep 25 22:16:56 UTC 2009 ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.30-2-amd64 root=UUID=26115ad8-956a-4542-9126-1747351cdb7e ro quiet ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [ 1.485042] ACPI Warning (nspredef-0943): \_SB_.PCI0.SAT0.PRT0._GTF: Return type mismatch - found Integer, expected Buffer [20090320] [ 1.485052] ata1.00: _GTF unexpected object type 0x1 [ 1.534546] ata1.00: ATA-8: WDC WD1600BEVT-22ZCT0, 11.01A11, max UDMA/133 [ 1.534551] ata1.00: 312581808 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 31/32) [ 1.536050] ata1.00: _GTF unexpected object type 0x1 [ 1.536197] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133 [ 1.552138] scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA WDC WD1600BEVT-2 11.0 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 [ 1.872021] ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300) [ 2.208023] ata5: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300) [ 2.544020] ata6: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 300) [ 2.569082] Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods [ 2.569227] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 312581808 512-byte hardware sectors: (160 GB/149 GiB) [ 2.569248] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off [ 2.569252] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 [ 2.569285] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA [ 2.569410] sda: sda1 sda2 sda3 [ 2.630250] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk [ 2.927557] PM: Starting manual resume from disk [ 2.988554] kjournald starting.
