Dear all, I just wanted to contribute to this ticket by reporting the same troubles, experienced.on an up-to-date Squeeze system while compiling 2.6.31-rc4 kernel. The fact that passing --initrd option will not generate an initrd file is uncongruous to say the least. A transparent generation of the initrd would be more than welcomed, as the explanation quoted from manpage and README files are very confusing.
