There are a series of conversions, which only obviously fail at the last
step, ps2fax, apparently in ghostscript. That failure might be the
result of some prior step, even as far back as gimp, producing invalid
output (although even then, ps2fax/ghostscript should fail more
gracefully).

How?
I attached all the files to the report.

Why would it be an error in libtiff in that case?

The error is being thrown by ps2fax, which is part of hylafax-server.
I'm not sure how ps2fax uses ghostscript, though it seems clear that it
does.
