I like Kalle's suggestion that "local $1" should happen automatically, and would prefer if that could be added as an upstream RFE or whatever they call it. I don't feel qualified to argue with upstream about this so would appreciate if Kalle or yourself could volunteer to bring this suggestion upstream.
