So this (and my bug backlog) is completed and assuming I have successful
testing results on the MAC (which im setting up now) I will start the
3.12 release today. But after a bit more research its almost a mute
point. rEFIt documentation claimes elilo is not required to boot Linux
on Macs.

The rEFIt documentation actually recommends using rEFIt plus LILO or
Grub with the default hyprid GPT/MBR partition setup because those
loaders use the legacy BIOS modules that have been included in Apple Mac
firmware since 2006 which is the ONLY way to run Linux on Macs and have
accelerated graphics. In fact this is what UBUNTU installer does even
with my x86_64 UEFI 2.0 box (although on this box, which is Intel, I use
elilo + nvidia fully accelerated, but grub works accelerated as well so
Intel must have provided legacy BIOS hooks as well). rEFIt plus elilo
gets you going but with software video(out of elilo's control) so looks
like it is not the most desirable way or simplest way to run Linux on a
MAC.

It looks like Debian would be best to default to Grub for Macs for the
best graphics functionality and my understanding of it today is that
rEFIt is not even required. One can just run a Linux installer cd,
install linux, and then hold the "option" button during Mac power on to
choose between OS X and Linux. But I have to believe that legacy BIOS
mode will be deprecated at some point in the future otherwise whats
the point of even using UEFI? I have also learned that grub2 has efi
capability running in its BETA today so Im sure it will be in fully
baked status when that future comes and then finally everybody can
standardize on one loader which will be fantastic.
grub has always been superior to elilo in terms of usability
and functionality in my opinion as elilo was a hurry up get it done
design to get Linux on Itanium running as soon as was possible, no
disrespect to Stephan Eranian whatsover.
