As stated in Debian Policy 10.1, it is recommended to support a few standardized DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS options. I was unable to get a backtrace for #551882 without tampering with the debian/rules because of this.

First, fpc doesn't care about CFLAGS, so this part of debian/rules seems useless, and the optimisation flag for fpc is hardcoded. Moreover, you should invoke fpc with the -g option to build with debugging information (dh_strip would then strip binaries if needed automagically).

As this package is now known to crash in certain conditions, it would probably be a good idea to add a -dbg package at the same time.
