I like to set it to the default value FAI_CONFIG_SRC=file:///srv/fai/config but then it's not possible that make-fai-nfsroot sets a working value for the install clients in $NFSROOT/etc/fai/fai.conf automatically.
Currently m-f-n detects if FAI_CONFIG_SRC is undefined in fai.conf and then uses nfs://<install server>/$FAI_CONFIGDIR for all install clients. A workaround for your problem is using the new fai option -c (or --cspace).
