The 1.6 series have been very slow for me too, simply launching Liferea usually takes around ten seconds. Fortunately, there exists a simple patch which makes it possible to manually tweak the pragma synchronous in sqlite. Simply setting this to off made a world of difference. Now Liferea starts instantly. I'll gladly take the risk of data loss for this kind of performance.
