Upgrading libglib2.0-0 to version 2.22.1-1 (required by gnome 2.28)
breaks gnome-settings-daemon version 2.26.1-2. Therefore most settings
cannot be applied while starting the gnome desktop.

Oh ok, I'm sorry. Just thought this could be the right place as I noticed that downgrading libglib2.0-0 to to version 2.20.0-5 seemed to help in this case but that's not really an option, as many new packages now depend on >=2.22.
I'll keep your hint in mind for the next bug report.

Trying to start the gnome appearance dialog leads to the following error
message:

Unable to start settings manager "gnome-settings-daemon" Without the
GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect.
This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE)
settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME
settings manager.

What output do you get if you try to run gnome-settings-daemon from the
command line?

Unfortunately, there is no output at all on the command line.

Cheers,
