From a quick test I ran with the group disk, it's not enough, hddtemp
will give a 'Permission denied' error.
In addition, it looks like hddtemp has an option to configure it as
SUID, but this is not the default behaviour.
According to the following hddtemp debian bug [1]:
"The current Linux kernels do not support reading SMART values
without being root".
