Hello,
when Auctex have been upgraded from 11.83 version, I couldn't compile a
LaTeX file normally from emacs23 by C-c C-c, as the compilation was
stopped with the following error:
! I can't find file `" -interaction=nonstopmode"'.

The described solution is working, that is the "Tex expand list" must be
modified to "|(lambda nil (if TeX-interactive-mode ""
"\\nonstopmode"))|". It is probably a bad default configuration in
Auctex configuration file for versions >11.83 (I had nothing related to
such configuration in my .emacs)
