I confirm the problem with unmodified IceWM from Lenny. I upgraded to testing last night, and has been able to reproduce the issue as well. Tray icon for 'vlc' appears only on the first (and may be a few more) vlc runs. Then it stops appearing until I restart IceWM (Logout -> Restart IceWM). The restart causes small black window with X icon to appear. The window can neither be closed nor killed (Window List -> Close -> Kill Client). It only goes away after restarting icewmtray. > Do you see anything suspicious in icewm's output? Usually stored to > ~/.xsession-errors . "icewmtray: Warning: latency: 0.059175" appears during _any_ IceWM restart. So looks like the warning is not related to the issue. vlc output in .xsession-errors does not differ between the "good" and the "bad" runs: # start vlc: VLC media player 1.0.1 Goldeneye [0x9957860] main services discovery error: no services_discovery module matched "sdp" [0x9957860] main services discovery error: no suitable services discovery module [0x996c6b0] main interface error: no interface module matched "globalhotkeys, none" [0x996c6b0] main interface error: no suitable interface module [0x98b88a8] main libvlc error: interface "globalhotkeys, none" initialization failed [0x98b88a8] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface.
