The mktemp(1) man page says nothing about what a template is (and
there's nothing about mktemp in the info manual), so that one gets
strange errors:

$ mktemp XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.pdf
mktemp: too few X's in template `XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.pdf'
