It would be helpful if dch supported version numbers that use YYYYMMDD
date syntax, as well as variants such as N.YYYYMMDD, YYYYMMDD.N,
and N-YYYYMMDD. (where N is a regular version number).

There are two places where understanding the version contains a date
could be useful:

* When using dch -i to increment the version, if the date is
in the Debian part of the version number (or the package is native),
the date could be advanced to the current date. Currently, the date
tends to be incremented by one day, sometimes to impossible dates
  like 20090832.
* When using dch -r, the date in the Debian part of the version number
could again be advanced to the current date, so that it matches the
  actual release date.

There are about 55 native packages with date-based version numbers.
I did not find any using a date in the debian version (N-YYYMMDD format).
So it may not be worth handling the non-native case.
